The Big 4 & a sustainable bathroom
Plastic free July has officially ended. Hopefully, most of you tried to reduce your plastic waste during this months and have maybe officially switched to some plastic free products.
I thought I would create a really simple blog to give you an easy-to-look-at list of switches you can make in your everyday life.
As I share on my Instagram page, we should start off by getting rid of the “Big 4”:
-Plastic bags;
-Plastic straws;
-Plastic bottles;
-Disposable coffee cups;
Up to 1 trillion plastic bags are used worldwide each years, killing 100,000 marine animals.
437 Million to 8.3 Billion plastic straws pollute coastlines all around the world.
80% of the plastic water bottles we buy end up in landfills and it takes up to 1000 years for one to decompose. Bad for the environment and bad for your own heath since chemicals leach into your water.
2.5 Billion single use coffee cups are discarded globally every year, with the UK only, using 7 million disposable cups every day.
There are so many sustainable companies out there producing these products! Just go get it!
Joco, Bambaw & Sandcloud are my favourite.

Next, our sustainable bathroom
BAMBOO TOOTHBRUSH
Nearly all toothbrushes made in the last 50 years are still out there.
600 million kg of plastic toothbrush waste is produced in 365 days.
Bamboo toothbrushes are starting to be very common and are such a great alternative to plastic ones. Most of them still have plastic bristles so just make sure to take those out before disposing of your bamboo toothbrush.
If you love your electric toothbrushes, there is an option for that one too, right here! Use my discount code GENBLUE!
NATURAL TOOTHPASTE, TOOTHPOWDER & MOUTHWASH
It is estimated that 1.5 billion toothpaste tubes are discarded every year.
These natural toothpastes only use natural ingredients, avoiding the synthetic ingredients and chemicals that are found in most common toothpastes.
Better for the environment and better for your teeth.
Disposable plastic razors are not easily recycled because they are made from mixed materials.
Did you know that 2 billion razors are thrown away each year?
I really don’t know why I didn’t make this switch ages ago! Even if we might make use of other ways for our hair removal, I believe most of us buy the odd pack of plastic razors sometimes.
Invest in a reusable one!! Better for the planet and much more delicate on your skin.
COTTON SWABS & MAKE UP REMOVER PADS
These bamboo cotton swabs are made from sustainable bamboo and are packaged in a plastic-free box.
Stop using those one-time-use makeup removal pads that are packaged in plastic.
Switch to reusable ones! They do the same job, probably better actually.
In the US alone, 550 Million empty shampoo bottles are thrown away each year.
You can start using bars of soap for your hands, as well as body wash, shampoo and conditioner. There are so many sustainable options out there. Make that extra little effort instead of buying those big plastic bottles in the supermarket.
Better for the planet. Better for your skin. Better for your hair.
MENSTRUAL CUPS & REUSABLE PADS
Still using boxes of plastic tampons each month? Well, it’s time to switch to these silicone menstrual cups that can last you up to 10 years, if taken care of properly, reduces bacteria accumulation and can be used up to 12 hours.
If you prefer using pads, that is absolutely fine! But stop using plastic-filled pads and opt for reusable ones instead.
HOMEMADE PRODUCTS
There are so many bathroom products that you can easily make yourself! I will share one with you now and if you are interested, I will share with you some more in the future.
Homemade deodorant:
No need to even spend money on buying any more deodorant! Make your own at home and give it whatever scent you love the most.
PS. if you have sensitive skin, just use a little less bicarbonate soda.
