With more people wanting to live sustainably, the options that are available have increased too.
We need to do something and make better choices. We want to be relying on products that are produced in such a way, to have minimal impact on the environment.
Using bamboo seems to be a rising sustainable choice, so let us take a closer look into the reality of bamboo.
The use of Bamboo might be something new for most developed countries but you must know that it has been used for thousands of years!!!
The 5 main characteristics of Bamboo:
BAMBOO CAN GROW NEARLY EVERYWHERE:
With over 1000 species, bamboo can grow in most regions of the world! The majority of bamboo production, however, comes from China and India, why?? labour costs are much lower out there as it is in all other fields….
BAMBOO ABSORBS GREENHOUSE GASES:
Bamboo sequesters carbon dioxide from the environment and produces 35% more oxygen than its equivalent size in trees. They definitely do their bit when it comes down to climate change!
NO CHEMICALS:
Unlike for cotton plantations, no large amounts of water, added pesticides and fertilizers are needed to grow bamboo. However, always keep in mind that there may be people/places who use these methods anyway, so do your research!
FAST GROWING:
Bamboo is fast-growing and doesn’t need replanting. In fact, it self-regenerates from its own roots! Different species grow at different rates but the record holder is… 91cm PER DAY!
A single bamboo branch can reach its full height in just one growing season. It gradually increases the number of side branches but doesn’t then grow any broader or taller.
IT’S A RENEWABLE RESOURCE:
Lets clear the meaning of renewable resource:
“ it is a substance of economic value that can be replaced or replenished in the same amount or less time as it takes to draw the supply down”.
Bamboo can be harvested in 1 to 5 years, depending on the species. 1 billion people live in bamboo houses and make use of this material in their everyday life. Bamboo can be used for a lot of common household utensils today such as plates, bowls, paper, cutlery, toothbrushes, straws, clothing, towels, reusable bottles, computer accessories and so many more things!
TO CONCLUDE
If you want to live more sustainably, bamboo definitely ticks that box and definitely wins any comparison to single-use plastics! but there are always certain things we have to consider:
- Where in the world is your item coming from? Although the importation of bamboo has a smaller carbon footprint compared to heavier materials, always keep in mind the distance your product is making to get to you.
- How is the product being produced & manufactured?
- Before buying something new think: is there anything I have in my house that I can reuse & repurpose instead?
- Before we import ‘eco-friendly’ products from the other side of the world, always consider going local. Look out for products which have been produced in your country & research the company.
